My Knight and Me: CN dumbs down one of the best animated shorts on Youtube
<< < (5/6) > >>
otto-san:
even in the original, the animation is a lil bit weird. it's kinda janky, and it often doesn't flow very well from one performance to the next. i think the problem is even more noticeable in the show trailer, tho. regardless, lowering the visual fidelity and simplifying the animation is to be expected for a TV series. they've gotta mass-produce these things, they can't spend a year's time on each episode. even an episode of SU takes like 6-8 months to finish iirc, though 3D animation has advantages that can save you a lot of time by not making you draw everything, they still probably have to do a decent amount of new models for each episode and that still all has to be animated, with other, less-obvious elements like lighting taken into consideration, voice acting, writing, storyboarding, editing, etc. the only reason these things get done in a reasonable amount of time is because they have an entire studio of people that can work on lots of different episodes at the same time, which also means that no one episode gets an entire studio behind it

edit:
actually i might say the animation in the show is actually better a lot of the time

don't know if it's necessarily appealing all the time, but i think the animation at least looks more like it was made by experienced animators. the acting (both voice acting and the performances given by the characters) are a little weird
Mr Queeba:
unfortunately for quite some time nick and cn and crap decided to stop putting effort into their shows and make them kid pandering attention wasters because they only care about making as much money as fast as they possibly can
great example: spongebob, once a great tv show that was actually fun to watch, fell once spielberg left the show to the point of being absolutely horrendous (see: house fancy, spongebob you're fired, squid baby, a pal for gary, etc)
cblock360:
when I saw that the animation was being turned into a t.v. show I was freaking out 'cause a few weeks before I saw the animation. I saw that knight in screenshots and stuff and thought "Hey, that guy looks familiar..."

--- Quote from: RedGajin on January 19, 2017, 01:43:36 PM ---i agree that yeah, cartoons can be a lot more engaging and deep than this one appears to be, but this isnt one of those cartoons. they made the two small kids the focus of the show because, believe it or not, the show is for kids and kids relate better to other children than a 40 y/o man.

--- End quote ---

kids relate to other kids because they're well-fleshed-out characters and are actually relatable, not solely because they're kids
it's kind of hard to see yourself in a walking stereotype that's as bland as dirt, even when you're very young and naive

--- Quote from: RedGajin on January 19, 2017, 01:43:36 PM ---op is throwing  a fit about how this animation has been dumbed down and lost its credibility, but thats the point.

--- End quote ---

why would it be a smart move to make a cartoon that could be enjoyed by everyone into a cartoon that could only be enjoyed by brain-dead children?
earlier you explained that they're trying to widen the viewer base, but that right there is a glaring contradiction

--- Quote from: RedGajin on January 19, 2017, 01:43:36 PM ---its more child friendly,

--- End quote ---

child-friendly is a meaningless loving word
the Sprout channel calls itself "child-friendly", but so does ROBLOX, a website where every few months a game about mass orgies will sneak up to the front page, and a website where you can find plenty of games about guns, dismemberment, and raw violence

remember when Don Bluth said that removing the risk from a story was the best way to appeal to an audience?
oh wait
he actually said that it doesn't matter how dark a story is; if it has a happy ending, kids will be able to take it

if your idea of child-friendly is safe, risk-free entertainment, then I hate to break it to you but the original "Powerpuff Girls" cartoon was not child-friendly by your standards, nor were shows like "Samurai Jack", "Ed, Edd n Eddy", "Steven Universe", and even some episodes of "Looney Tunes" (not even the tribal ones)
yet these cartoons were most popular among kids and even parents could enjoy aspects of it

you see, when I think "child-friendly", I think "watered-down", and that's why I take such issue with it

--- Quote from: RedGajin on January 19, 2017, 01:43:36 PM ---it still has the same slapstick humor,

--- End quote ---

no, it has slapstick humor
not the SAME slapstick humor
the reason the slapstick humor was so funny in "850 meters" was because the editing of the short intensified it with moody atmosphere and typical action tropes
you can't take that out and replace it with NOTHING

--- Quote from: RedGajin on January 19, 2017, 01:43:36 PM ---and the female character is thrown in to appeal to a wider viewer base.

--- End quote ---

that'd be true, if she were actually a character

--- Quote from: RedGajin on January 19, 2017, 01:43:36 PM ---im sure if, given the resources, the original creator would have loved to create an entirely different show that held truer to his original animation, but thats not the case. he was given an offer by CN, a channel that makes tv shows primarily geared towards children. and lo and behold, this rendition is geared towards children.

--- End quote ---

CN makes cartoons
it does not make cartoons exclusively geared towards kids
if that were the truth, a lot of the shows that elevated CN to its current status would not have been aired

and frankly, IDK if it's Joeri's fault the cartoon is like this
if it is, that'd be sad because judging by "850 meters" he had a lot of show-making potential

--- Quote from: RedGajin on January 19, 2017, 01:43:36 PM ---CN is trying to make money by appealing to the majority of their viewers, not appeal to the much smaller minority of teens that devotedly follow cartoon series.

--- End quote ---

fair enough
that doesn't excuse it being blander than bland though
RedGajin:
youre wildly overthinking how indepth this cartoon needs to be. i mean, well fleshed out characters? ed from edd ed and eddy was a handicap who smelled bad, and his appeal to children was that he was stupid and did stupid things and it made them laugh. from CN's standpoint, this will probably turn out to be a successful show. obviously not for the next ten years or something, but it would make them a profit, and MOST (excluding people who apparently need well rounded and developed characters with rich original storytelling in a cartoon) of their viewers will enjoy it while it airs.

from a fanboy of the original animation's standpoint, yeah its kind of a letdown. but this is a show that was made for children. it doesnt have to appeal to you, this isnt supposed to be a perfect remake and vision of the original.
