In the film, James McAvoy plays a character with 24 different split personalities, a symptom of dissociative identity disorder. His character kidnaps teenage girls and holds them captive. In the trailer, he can be seen wearing a dress and heels. a trope that Care2 petition author Sarah Rose says 'invokes society's sensible values in an attempt to scare audiences.' Sarah Rose goes onto say this.

"There are a lot of things that are inherently problematic about the upcoming Shyamalan film. We're at a point in society where male-bodied people wearing dresses shouldn't be portrayed as offensive, strange, or scary, but films like this do nothing to counteract that narrative. Additionally, this film paints mental illness as a horror movie plot, and not a real issue that should be addressed seriously and with profound compassion."

"This isn't the first time a movie has invoked society's sensible values in an attempt to scare audiences, consider Norman Bates in Psycho and Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs. Moviemakers like M. Night would do well to move past this tired and offensive trope. As both an advocate for and member of the LGBTQ community and someone whose life has been profoundly impacted by mental illness in those close to me. I find this film and it's subject matter impossible to support."

Sarah Rose says she's calling for the boycott because she identifies as trans and mental illness has impacted her life. The movie recently screened at Fantastic Fest, with many fans praising M. Night Shyamalan's work.

adding on to this, the film currently has a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes and is generally favorable by most critic's standards

This is getting tiring by the day.

When are people gonna grow the forget up, and stop looking for things to bitch about.

didn't the danish girl come out only a year ago??

this seems very reactionary

77% on Rotten Tomatoes is good for Shyamalan

77% on Rotten Tomatoes is good for Shyamalan

apparently this is actually pretty good
I haven't seen it but people recommend it solely for McAvoy's performance

im down for boycotting shyamalan movies but only because i think he makes stuffty movies

The trans girl protesting actually credited her 3 different personalities on the petition.

/s

feminism is already infecting the gaming community, don't let it infect movies bc I'd like to watch Blade Runner 2049 without some dumb cunt whining about some female character being objectified in some manner cool thanks now forget off back to tumblr.

Yeah I googled what ever happened to Shyamalan the other week and read some press, I probably watch it streamed.

i would complain about this movie more for its silly plot than because of common sense

not entirely sure what common sense has to do with it but the "mental illness is scary :(" cliche needs to die

Shyamalan's first decent movie in a while and people are pissing their pants for all the wrong reasons

for forgets sake, PC culture is gonna destroy all entertainment at this rate

shyamalan didn't make this movie because he wanted to show those loving transmissions what for, he wanted to explore the concept of mental illness and make a terrifying movie out of it. yes, there is a stuffty stigma around mental illness and all, and not all mentally ill people are completely deranged lunatics, but you can't ignore the fact that mental illness does prompt people to do such things and that the concept of it can be used for a scary piece of entertainment. besides, it's not like people are gonna walk out of the movie theater thinking "gosh, those transmissions and schizos are probably gonna kill me and steal my children" and anyone who believes that will actually happen as a result of this movie is an idiot.

TL;DR it's a thriller movie, it's meant to be scary, get over it.

one of my coworkers brings this up when i talk about split. he says it puts a bad image on people with these issues

yknow i can vibe with where hes coming from, but are people honestly gonna see this movie and expect all people with multiple personalities to be like crazy kevin? honestly i really enjoy the idea of multiple personalities as a plot point, but he says its harmful to those who really suffer from these issues
