What do new websites have that older ones didn't?

It mostly has to do with what the average internet speed of that time was. Website builders built for speed. Cant do much when your high res banner wont load for 80% of the consumer market.

Luckily, we dont have to worry about that as much today. We can use as many fancy effects as we want.

Yes, luckily, but also unfortunate in a sense, because people tend to abuse it.

which, in turn, makes "nicer" looking websites.

i think the canvas is a blessing, it allows you to create in-browser games like agar.io, which while looked down upon, gives a lot of people some good, quick games to play.
