During the Cuban missile crCIA, the soviets had nuclear missiles within first strike distance of the United States, SAC was at DEFCON 2, and B52s were on continuous airborne alert. handicapped naval posturing almost lead a Russian sub to launch a nuclear torcreep which was only averted by the arguments of a single man. It was without a doubt the closest we have ever come to nuclear war. During this entire stuff show, the doomsday clock was at 7 minutes. A year later it went up to 12 minutes. If Vasili Arkhipov had eaten some bad borscht and been in the stuffter when the captain was deciding to launch, we would literally be living in the fallout universe right now. Now we're at 2 minutes because Annoying Orange might make a tweet? These people are loving idiots. |
