the thing is: this wasn't an ordinary dev kit.

this is the same dev kit case that was used in extremely early (pre xbox release) development.
so if you hit the lottery and land on a microsoft xbox dashboard/xbox drivers dev kit, it makes the biggest difference.

most of them ARE just stuffty random dev kits that might have a halo 1 alpha or something. but that possibility was still there and was what ended up causing freemcboot to exist for the PS2 as some clever person got a hold of a ps3 dev kit that held encryption keys which allowed them to find out a way to boot off of a ps2 memory card (sort of like a pandoras battery except without the battery)

There's. No. Files. On. It.

Dev-kits very rarely have any attached storage, the same as the standard console. It's not necessary, as it's expected the end developer will have a device to store their data.

no, it's a version of the console with higher specc'd hardware that allows attached USB devices and unauthorized application execution, along with massive amounts of built in debugging functionality.

also, xbox dev kits also require system software to run obviously.
xbox is an x86 device and as such generally requires bootable media to even start...

...and since you can't boot directly to games through some miracle that's where the xbox dashboard and built in harddrives come into play. so the luck chance is still there that you could find some source code of xbox drivers or the xbox dashboard. the chance is not high since it's microsoft we're talking about here, but even microsoft has its leaks (windows 2000 source)

aand one final thing here: he's bullstuffting, the case is a bit rough but somehow clear in the picture which can be attributed to it possibly being 3d printed and cleverly painted.

I believe the OS is stored in the ROM, compressed.

--- Quote from: https://www.cs.umd.edu/~meesh/cmsc411/website/proj01/xbox/Xdk.htm ---When the user turns on the console, the system software is decompressed out of read-only memory (ROM) into random access memory (RAM). Once in RAM, the system software initializes the hardware (DVD, audio, video, and so on).

After the hardware has been initialized, the system software will display the boot graphic and play the startup sound. Because there are no video or audio drivers in the kernel, this is done by poking the registers of the sound and video card directly. This graphic and sound will play approximately 1 second from the time the machine is turned on.
