they don't even know if it's stable yet though: "some theoretical work has suggested that metallic hydrogen could be metastable, meaning it will remain metallic even as the pressure and temperature that forced it there is released."

why would you think that? gold is found all over the world in relatively large quantities. this hydrogen metal, on the other hand, only exists in one laboratory, and nowhere else on the planet
