Linux Thread
(1/50) > >>
d:
I noticed that a lot of Linux threads have popped up more than before. Instead of having multiple of them, I decided to make this thread.

What is Linux?
Linux (or GNU/Linux) is an operating system based for open-source and free software environments. It is the foundation for most operating systems and has had major growth in the past few years due to Microsoft's business practices.

Advantages over Windows
Linux has/is:

* Customization: A wide range of customization options, distributions, and desktop environments to choose from
* Freedom and security: Linux is open-source and free software. You are allowed to modify it and distribute it for free.
Unlike Windows, Linux operating systems have less, if not zero surveillance.

* Fast: Most Linux systems come with only the stuff you need, and the stuff you don't want can be easily removed and installed back.

Windows has/is:

* Customization is little to none: Windows does not allow you to modify more than the colors by default. It requires heavy tweaking in order to have even the simplest things change, and you cannot change your desktop environment.
* Spyware: Windows, in the past, has allowed the NSA to use a fail proof key to get into anyone's computers. Windows 10 has also been proven to send your images and other files to different databases. It also collects your data for advertising on your lock screen, start menu, and regularly monitors any microphones you have to check if you have said things like "Hey Cortana". Microsoft is also a part of the NSA's "PRISM" program.

* Ad ware implementations: Microsoft reserves the right to regularly advertise and install whatever apps they want to without your input or choice.

Right, let's crack on to work.

For the same amount of effort, Windows also offers a deep level of customisation and flexibility. A lot of that is hidden behind the mask of the Command Prompt, Group Policy Editor or the Registry Editor, but any decent power user will know how to find what they're looking for.

This is the biggest pile of stuff I've ever heard in my entire life. Nobody is watching you download hentai on Windows 10. Just because you've historically been a paranoid forgetwit in every Windows 10 thread that's come up, doesn't mean you get to claim baseless speculation as fact.

Windows 10 also lets you add and remove the things you don't want on the fly, and it comes with a wide range of functionality that everybody can find a use for.

Which proves that you didn't spend more than 20 seconds in any Windows operating system.

See above. You are a tin-foil wearing rooster-jockey.

This is a curious one to me, because I haven't actually seen it in effect, and I know that anybody could very easily push malicious code to any Linux distribution's core. What's your point?

You come off as a raving lunatic. This is embarrassing. Let's just remember my other arguments I wrote today;

--- Quote ---
* Can't play 90% of my game library.
* Can't use any of my asset extraction tools.
* Can't use any my game development tools (or at least, they aren't as stable as Windows/Mac).
* Can't use any of my audio library management tools.
* Can't use my video production tools.
* Can't use my media file conversion tools.
* Can't use my programming tools.
* Can't use my writing and time management applications.
* Can't escape the fact that by admitting I'm proud to use Linux as my main OS, I'm a pretentious knobwank.
--- End quote ---

--- Quote ---Why the forget would I use a "not an emulator" to run the stuff that I could just run natively? Yeah, I'd love to sacrifice additional performance AND even gain some additional bugs while running my applications. Smart idea.

There's literally no benefit to any flavour of Linux over Windows, aside from the purported "freedom" you gain, which is relatively zero benefit to the average user, or even most power users. Windows even has more features out of the box.

The only benefit Linux has is that it's free, but you get exactly what you pay for.

EDIT: Another legitimate purpose of UNIX/LINUX is that, being open-source, it can be modified and deployed on custom hardware, which is why it's extremely popular for integrated systems and commercial applications. Again, however, that doesn't help 90% of consumers who won't go anywhere near the source.
--- End quote ---

The fact of the matter is that Linux is such a roundabout way to accomplish such a limited set of tasks. Have fun using your open-source software that has less than half the functionality of my commercial software.
