--- Quote from: McJob on January 31, 2017, 10:39:24 PM ---I know that anybody could very easily push malicious code to any Linux distribution's core. --- End quote --- literally no --- Quote from: McJob on January 31, 2017, 10:39:24 PM ---Can't play 90% of my game library. Can't use any of my asset extraction tools. Can't use any my game development tools (or at least, they aren't as stable as Windows/Mac). Can't use any of my audio library management tools. Can't use my video production tools. Can't use my media file conversion tools. Can't use my programming tools. Can't use my writing and time management applications. Can't escape the fact that by admitting I'm proud to use Linux as my main OS, I'm a pretentious knobwank. --- End quote --- if you only program with VS and other traditionally-windows tools, it's pretty meaningless to complain about linux not having them because: obviously and if your media players aren't available on linux, that's not really a problem with linux? VLC is wonderful, and available for all of the three big operating systems being proud of using linux is no less pretentious than being proud of using windows or OS X. or, for that matter, being proud of anything at all that didn't require serious effort on your part if you think there is zero benefit to using linux, then you're just intentionally ignoring facts because it supports your viewpoints better that way I use windows and honestly I can't see myself maining linux, but to pretend that windows is the perfect operating system for everyone and for all uses, just so I can act like a big whiny baby on an internet forum, would be kind of lame, huh? and you really are acting like a baby. why do you care if someone else uses linux? why do you even care if they imply windows is bad? you don't develop windows. it's not a personal attack. windows still has the vast majority of the market share, so it's not like you can reasonably be worried about someone on the internet convincing people to give less money to a multinational corporation with several billion dollars of revenue every year. so what is it? |

mcjob confirmed microsoft shill I like linux because I actually use it for work/school/everything --- Quote ---Can't use my programming tools. --- End quote --- now if this is the biggest loving horsestuff i've heard. I go to school as a software engineer and like 70% of our work is done on Linux/Unix/etc. Development environments on linux are extremely powerful, I don't know for game dev though, but any other commercial programming is mostly done on mac/linux because of a great shell and a stable environment.\ The only time you see devs jumping ship to windows is because of Visual studio or C# but that's for windows dev |

McJob I'm trying to be constructive here so don't think this is anything personal against you. --- Quote from: McJob on January 31, 2017, 10:39:24 PM ---For the same amount of effort, Windows also offers a deep level of customisation and flexibility. A lot of that is hidden behind the mask of the Command Prompt, Group Policy Editor or the Registry Editor, but any decent power user will know how to find what they're looking for --- End quote --- I'm going to have to disagree with that, Linux offers completely different desktops if you don't like said desktop. It's like comparing iOS to Android, Android gives you options, but with compromises. iOS provides a similar experience for everyone. Also I don't think there's any easy way of changing something as simple as the icons on windows without doing something dumb, sooo. --- Quote from: McJob on January 31, 2017, 10:39:24 PM ---This is the biggest pile of stuff I've ever heard in my entire life. Nobody is watching you download hentai on Windows 10. Just because you've historically been a paranoid forgetwit in every Windows 10 thread that's come up, doesn't mean you get to claim baseless speculation as fact. --- End quote --- I agree. --- Quote from: McJob on January 31, 2017, 10:39:24 PM ---Windows 10 also lets you add and remove the things you don't want on the fly, and it comes with a wide range of functionality that everybody can find a use for. --- End quote --- Again, Linux can be configured to how you like. Yes it is a lot faster in some cases, in others it sucks. (Unity) --- Quote from: McJob on January 31, 2017, 10:39:24 PM ---Can't play 90% of my game library. --- End quote --- True. However it really only hammers big titles at the current state. --- Quote from: McJob on January 31, 2017, 10:39:24 PM ---Can't use any of my asset extraction tools. --- End quote --- The rest of this is very specific, so I'd rather hear what specifically, I'm not trying to convince you to switch, but I'm just letting you know there are alternatives on Linux. GIMP is terrible though, that funny enough is a pretty big turn off for me with linux. Not to be a mediator, but --- Quote from: d on January 31, 2017, 10:20:45 PM ---Ad ware implementations: Microsoft reserves the right to regularly advertise and install whatever apps they want to without your input or choice. --- End quote --- This has literally never happened. You can turn off suggestions in the start menu, but they have never outright installed any bloatware. |

--- Quote from: Foxscotch on January 31, 2017, 10:59:07 PM ---if you only program with VS and other traditionally-windows tools, it's pretty meaningless to complain about linux not having them because: obviously --- End quote --- I use Visual Studio because I've yet to find another IDE with the same wide scope of tools, particularly for refactoring and debugging. --- Quote from: Foxscotch on January 31, 2017, 10:59:07 PM ---and if your media players aren't available on linux, that's not really a problem with linux? VLC is wonderful, and available for all of the three big operating systems --- End quote --- Ignoring the media players for obscure and weird game audio formats; I've yet to find a single media player, outside of iTunes and some weird stuff my friend made, which has support for playlist folders. Probably doesn't sound like much, but that is personally a big deal for me. --- Quote from: Foxscotch on January 31, 2017, 10:59:07 PM ---if you think there is zero benefit to using linux, then you're just intentionally ignoring facts because it supports your viewpoints better that way --- End quote --- Then where's the benefits? I've been asking all goddam day. Why would I consider using Linux over Windows in any situation? --- Quote from: Foxscotch on January 31, 2017, 10:59:07 PM ---but to pretend that windows is the perfect operating system for everyone and for all uses --- End quote --- The only two instances where I can think this isn't true is for people making integrated systems and for the fringe crowd. Maybe for system admins, but even then... --- Quote from: Foxscotch on January 31, 2017, 10:59:07 PM ---just so I can act like a big whiny baby on an internet forum, would be kind of lame, huh? --- End quote --- And congratulations to you for rushing in to white knight your favourite operating system of choice. What a hero. --- Quote from: Foxscotch on January 31, 2017, 10:59:07 PM ---why do you care if someone else uses linux? --- End quote --- D and I have beef. This is a man who I've had legendary rows with because he won't drop the fact he's a conspiracy-focused nutcase. That's exactly why I replied. Had he not said a word about Windows, I wouldn't have raised a single complaint. I respect Linux as an alternative, but when somebody wants to spit in my face and dig up old arguments they lost...I ain't letting that slide. |
