It appears that way because we're still in the first generation of VR titles, and we've had 40+ years of playing video games stationary and on external screens. Just remember that video gaming itself was considered a fad when the first arcade units were rolled out, and that even in the 90s big market chains would often refuse to stock anything but the most popular video games (which has partly to do with the "Video Game Crash" of the 80s, but that affect is still here in Australia, where K-Mart and Target's game shelves are usually limited on a very small array of "popular" kids games).

Cardboard was the first I used (as my bloody friend was given permission to use the college's one Oculus DK1 for his game, so my friend and I had to stick our project on Android). It's come along way, but I'm still not so sure about it.

I'm still a pleb who hasn't used any type of VR other than a Wii's motion controls

Virtual Reality is a realistic and immersive simulation of a three-dimensional environment. Motion Controls aren't the critical part of that; they certainly help, but MANY VR games are still using standard Xbox 360/One controllers or the keyboard.
