although I support this route, this whole sideplot seems pretty predictable, possibly building up to an important death/separation device (or, god forbid, some sort of "liar reveal")

He made clear that in the future Jack would be the one who would use it [spoilers]but now we'll never know.

I'm really hoping that Guardian's not dead but it really seems like the narrative is leaning in the direction where the portal gets repaired and Jack is able to do his thing.[/spoilers]
