I haven't watched the entire cartoon but it really does seem like it's fallen prone to Spongebob syndrome
the miniseries they put out recently seems to be grabbing a lot of attention though

i watched the entirety of the islands thing on youtube and it had a really good story and revealed a lot about finn's origin

lol kinda true that this show attracted stoners, idk why either. I only watched a few episodes ever, it was mildly entertaining but not really my cup of tea.
