(to go along with malwarebytes)

Kaspersky is pretty damn good iirc, I used to have it and it detected everything

norton
is this a joke? because first of all norton is loving bloatware, second it a lot of some it doesn't even scan the files, it just deletes the file just because it "isn't safe" even though it is.

Just don't run sketchy programs (or go to sketchy websites,) keep everything up-to-date on your computer, and run a full scan every week or two.

put all the sketchy stuff on a VM that has no write/transfer capability to the host PC?

or take your roommates laptop

if you have a budget, go with Kaspersky. If you want a more light-duty and free but insanely effective scan-only too, go with MalwareBytes. MB is actually a little better than Kaspersky when it comes to stuff like toolbar/adware removal.
