with healthcare as outrageously expensive as it is in america (i know this is determined largely by market forces, but it's still atrociously high for most people and it's not getting better with or without obamacare), people who are poor and uninsured are incredibly vulnerable and there's nothing they can do about it. there's no debate about "more responsible spending" or not buying a new iphone, if you don't have insurance and you get seriously injured or ill, the most likely situation for a poor person is that they don't get treatment, and in all likelihood, probably still have to pay for their hospital room. additionally, if you can't afford treatment early, you put it off. if you put it off, the problem gets worse. if the problem gets worse, the necessary treatment gets worse. if it gets so bad that you end up in the hospital, then there are a few things that happen here. for one, you're stuck with a severe health problem that you can't afford to fix. additionally, you're placing a burden on public healthcare systems anyway by ending up in a hospital room you can't pay for.
leaving millions and millions of people without health insurance is irresponsible and inexcusable, and i expect that a lot of republicans in congress will agree. i don't agree with punishing people for not having insurance, but that one little trip is not nearly god damn enough to justify yanking affordable healthcare away from millions of people who otherwise couldn't afford treatment.

All of that is great and all, but it's not a right. This country worked perfectly fine without required healthcare for a long while. Now we tax people who don't need it to help people who do. Which is insane.

fundamentally, do you think people who can't afford health insurance should be forced to deal with their problems on their own, or should they be able to get help, or something else entirely?

Health care isn't a right. If you can't pay for your chips you don't get to walk out of Walmart with them. You don't get to charge other people for them.
