theoretical owl scenario discussion topic

we all know that owls make the sound "hoo" and kill stuff with their talons, but tonight i seek a sociological answer to this scenario:
what if owls instead said, "hoom'st"
im seeking an answer from a functionalist perspective and would greatly appreciate any input from anyone willing.
