--- Quote from: Pecon on March 21, 2017, 08:14:38 PM ---I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, I think it's basically correct to classify it as a mental illness; but on the other hand I think classifying it that way has somewhat increased stigma about it. Since people with gender dysphoria already deal with stigma, classifying it as a mental illness opens it to a little bit of additional stigma due to general views on mental illnesses. The main reason they wanted to eliminate it as a mental disorder is because unlike a number of other disorders it, in an ideal world, should have no impact on the people that interact with the person experiencing it. My opinion usually is still that it should be classified as a mental illness, because that helps it receive appropriate attention by medical insurance and other agencies that are involved in the process of helping people with mental illnesses; and also because it's just scientifically accurate to classify it that way.

Also the 'bathroom issue' is a load of crap to distract people from real issues.

yeah but it's mostly the fault of the people who stigmatize mental illness in the first place

Metario:

i think that there ARE legitimate concerns with gender identity disorder/gender dysphoria but I don't believe the majority of people who say they have it. i.e tumblrettes and the like.
bathroom issue is full of stuff, if you have a richard go into the guys bathroom
if you have a vagerdazzler 9000 go into the womens bathroom
simple as that

King Tøny:

It's a mental illness.

except that can reveal trans people who were otherwise passing, causing others to single them out for harassment. if you're being a remotely decent person, you're not looking at anyone else's privates in the bathroom anyway, so it doesn't matter there either. if anything, a gay in the bathroom is more threatening.

i mean, the people who fear-monger about "but creepy old men will pretend to be trans to molest ur wife/daughter!" probably would complain about gays using the same bathroom as them, too, if only they had an easy way to tell. in practice this risk is negligible because the ones who aren't even TRYING to pass are pretty obviously up to something anyway.
