Martin Luther King was around in 1960, not the 1800s. Segregation and Slavery are two completely different things. One is a political disenfranchisement and the other is loving slavery.

Violence is okay if your basic human loving rights are being threatened. I would justify fighting against slavery just as i would justify rioting in a national socialist death camp to escape.
During the 60s the time was very different, they used to hose people down just for walking around.
