Not necessarily atheists, moreso the philosophy of Atheism that the USSR put into practice; the USSR as a state was responsible for the deaths of over 60 million+ people.

--- Quote from: SeventhSandwich on March 23, 2017, 03:16:02 PM ---the only reason communist societies are atheistic to begin with is because religion espouses authority figures higher than the state

--- End quote ---
Interestingly, in those states, when they attempted to ban religion in their territories, they instead elevated their communist leaders as gods to be worshiped instead. Hence why North Koreans and Communists were often required to pledge their undying loyalty to Mao/Stalin and worship them through various forms (visiting and bowing to giant statues of them, being required by the state to hang pictures of them in their houses, absolute glorification of them through state media, etc.).

--- Quote from: Scout31 on March 23, 2017, 03:19:22 PM ---Don't forget Christianity. Remember the time they attacked the muslims for their religious beliefs and land?

The Crusades were wars carried out by the Roman Catholic Church, a religious group that does not represent biblical Christianity nor reflect its teachings, both in what they teach today and what they did in the Crusades.

So you're telling me that they did violent things on behalf of their religion because of their teaching? And not the religion itself? Wow, what a concept.

This is a known defect of Communism, since people don't willingly consent to collectivism unless you have a super strong central government that forces them to do so.

I don't know if I necessarily think that governments should be atheistic, but I definitely think they should be secular. The idea being that the best governments don't push one religion or any religion, but just let people do whatever the hell they please when it comes to personal beliefs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Catholicism basically the default form of Christianity for the majority of the time there have been Christians?
