I'm massively skeptical of a lot of Elon's projects and aspirations. 99% of breakthroughs and technical developments come from a group of brilliant minds finding something new, not billionaires throwing massive piles of money at problems and saying, "Fix it!"

If he'd donate his money to existing tech labs and stuff he'd probably get more done, but of course he wouldn't have his name plastered over it.
