I need to prove the earth is flat at geography

You can't do that if you say a=b then a-b will be 0 so at step 4 your equation evaluates to zero. All you are proving is that 1*0 = 2*0 which is 100% correct.

not my image lol, it's the famous "proof" meme that 2 = 1
but anyway I think the fourth line is valid (difference of two squares), it's the 6th line that I think it fails at however I just realised I'm trying to prove 2 = 1 so call me a handicap

No step 4 itself is valid but from step 4 to 5 you're dividing by (a-b) which is zero. You can't divide by zero.
