Right ear ringing after shooting shotgun

Pages: << < (11/16) > >>

General:

Yeah its probably permanent considering how loud shotguns are, but you'll get used to it. A lot of people get tinnitus nowadays from loud music

Rally:

It can take 3 weeks for the ringing to go away, so you shouldn't worry about it too much. For the record, you have most likely permanently damaged your hearing. Hearing damage can occur at 85 db, and an average 12 gauge round can be around 156 db. One blast isn't going to deafen you, but it adds up, so be more careful in the future.

As far as I'm aware people in the military do get issued ear pro, but many of them don't wear it. You can fire TOWs and LMG's all day long and you won't go totally deaf. You hear stories all the time of people bouncing flashbangs off doors in training and being unable to hear for days at a time. The (permanent) damage will mainly occur in higher frequencies and will probably only show up later in life.

That's the cost of doing business in the military, but they have an excuse because sometimes it is legitimately dangerous for them to wear ear pro. That's why they get benefits. OP doesn't, so he should wear ear pro.

Tayasaurus:

Always go above and beyond your own protection when shooting recreationally.

Keep your hearing protection on

Wear your loving eye protection

Keep your finger off the trigger until when ready to fire

Triple Quadruple check your weapons for stray ammunition in them when you are finished

Clean your weapons so they can function and perform normally and don't get broken

Don't point your weapon at another person unless you fully intend to murder them (Murder is highly discouraged, please do not murder)
