Without liquid crystal the light is literally just the backlighting, aka white and thats it, and it's only 1 color

I thought there was a bunch of light splitters/led lights working to form colors. Thanks for the info.

Nah, the liquid crystal does everything aside from emit light, which is what the backlighting does, which is just bright white
