It's not like he pressed some "Get into Stanford" button by doing this. It was a huge gamble honestly because it could easily be seen as lazy or contrived. The kid had a lot at stake too because the rest of his resume is actually loving phenomenal as Seventh said, and he probably would have risked less if he had just written a more conventional essay.
