These are the kinds that you really need to worry about. It's the main reason why I always run ad blockers, because I haven't seen a single advertising site that actually cares enough to filter out any potentially malicious adverts, including Google.
The drive-bys exploit flaws in your browser in order to automatically infect your computer without downloading any executable file. It's really bad.

Although if a large website like that got hacked and injected with ransomware then a solution/patch WILL be made to save face. It's impossible for the average coder to make fixes for these obscure individual ransomware viruses but with enough money behind it a fix would be made.

No, it's actually impossible. The 'fix' is to find the private key used to encrypt all your files. Unless they invent high-efficiency quantum computers to save face, you can't do it.
