They called it "The War of Northern Aggression" or "The War Between the States" and downplayed or ignored the fact that it started solely because the South wanted to keep their slaves, which was spelled out clearly in the secessionist documents. |

Certainty and interesting topic that you could go really in-depth about the ethics behind it but its interesting watching this actually happen. Learning about Paris was quite interesting and how much Notre Dame Cathedral was, by Victor Hugo's idea, destroyed because of different leaders ideologies. Monuments and landmarks are constantly being changed and it's really just since the beginning of the 20th century have we begun to see the preservation of landmarks and monuments. While in my personal opinion I find it weird to see a Confederate monument I am not necessarily opposed to it as it has some historical significance but ideas are constantly changing and so the thought of the monument being torn down is not surprising or really that saddening. Monuments and landmarks such as this can be historically kept in museums for the most part or preserved by historians and archaeologists but I am much more upset about the monuments and landmarks of historic civilizations that have been recklessly destroyed but such is life and its the way it always will be. The key difference between this monument and places such as Auschwitz is that Auschwitz isn't praising, glorifying, or celebrating national socialist struggle in Europe, its a place with great historical information and background. Its not something that was constructed to praise the national socialist's or their ideology. |
