Is 75hz a bad idea?
The new games I own only go up to 100fps on my system, so is it a good compromise or is there some negative downside?

Personally I'd much rather have an IPS panel monitor than a TN with ultra low refresh. You'll get your best picture quality with 1440p IPS. You'll have much more of a bitch of a time getting 144 to be consistent, where resolution is consistent no matter your framerate (id weigh resolution more of a priority over refresh).
