there's a robin nest on my backyard porch's light

I did this once to a house sparrow nest, it was inside a clothes line thing, like the pole bases, and the hollow part was where the nest was, I was sure there was no baby birds inside so i lit a peice of paper and shoved it in there, smoke started coming out.
