I mean, it's less the fact that it's not coming from mainstream sources, but more the fact that it's coming from fringe sources with a historical record for cooking up wacko bullstuff.
Look at it this way: Fox News is probably CNN's primary competitor. If this "fake protestors" accusation had any weight, Fox News would be all over it like flies on stuff. But they aren't reporting on it because it's bullstuff and they'll lose credibility for violating tenets of basic journalistic integrity. Fox News swings right but they're still a legitimate news source.
