The currency there is worth far less than a dollar, and being an impoverished nation, a dollar probably has crazy purchasing power. You could probably have an entire house built for the cost of sending a single volunteer on a plane. Not only that, but then you've got Haitians who have jobs and wages. That's good for an economy that must stand on its own two feet. |

I forgot to mention that the volunteers not only are not paid, they have to pay to go, in order to help cover the cost of taking them.
