Author Topic: Found a weird USB device in my TV  (Read 4599 times)

Alright one time I found a USB stick on the ground of the wal-mart parking lot.
Now I wouldn't have picked it up or given two stuffs about it if it wasn't for the fact that I set up a laptop the other day that functions as a sort of "patient zero" for malware. I test out different kinds of malware against my antivirus, put each antivirus in little competitions, and test out sketchy looking programs. It's great and it's a loving blast to install BonziBuddy, every toolbar under the sun, you get the idea. The reason I didn't use a virtual machine is because my internet, even just between computers at home, is loving garbage.

So I pop the thing in and it has 8 gigs of storage in it. And it's all full o' research. Almost every byte has research on it, and the times where images would be too big, there were text documents of smut.

to be fair I don't think inside a TV would be the first place someone looking to spread malware would put a USB drive
smart TVs are a thing now

like, the stuff was he doing with it in wal-mart? do they trade em around like pokemon cards?

Always kept it on him so no one else would find it?

But hey, with your stuffty internet, at least you don't have to download any now.

find the USB port in your toaster and try to convince the toaster that it's a TV

this is why I hate IoT
except you'd need storage space to do that. The USB in question is pretty obviously just for flashing firmware, so the amount of storage space is miniscule and you'd have to get the BIOS to accept that it's a configured flash drive, as well

As people have pointed out this is a factory tool used for flashing firmware and resetting TV to default state. That said, you guys should not be plugging in usb sticks you find lying around into your everyday laptops or computers. A common way to spread viruses is to load it up onto a USB stick and then load some music or whatever onto it and hand them out or 'drop' them around parking lots. That guy who said he found a USB stick full of research probably installed a RAT (Remote Access Tool) onto his PC when he plugged it in.

^^ if anyones watched mr. robot, theres a perfect example of that happening to someone in the show lol

Right, but he also said it was a computer he intentionally installs viruses on.

plug it in your computer and try boot of it

This. Basically, treat them like you found a used condom.
