how does discord make money??? these are the questions we need to be asking

this is an actual unanswered question and has a bunch of more tech minded people worried

discord rn is running off of venture capital fumes: they were given a stuff ton of money to start the service and get popular three years ago, but rn they have no actual way of making money off that popularity. its frankly worrying since many love the service but once that VC runs out they may end up folding, if not cause they cant sustain themselves through income, then by their investors jumping ship.

I feel like they'd sooner introduce incentives to start paying than they would shut down. Maybe the alleged video chat will need to be hosted by nitro users for groups. That'll bring them in a lot of money.

u really believe thats enough to pay for all the servers they need to support this service?

if nitro is required for vid or large voice chat groups then i can see it working. i dont think the majority of the gamer population has suddenly decided paying money to support free services is a noble thing to do. if only there were some financial reports published somewhere, but its understandable that they havent since theres a good chance its not very hopeful atm

merch is good stuff but i doubt it sells enough to actually depend on it to keep the servers up and pay their employees

Yeah and skype just always works, and is super secure. You don't even get bots adding you. The support is phenomenal.
