that's literally just the survivorship bias. they could get it wrong 99% of the time but you don't hear about it on the news every time someone gets death threats or calls to their employer because some nutjob on the internet thinks they're an active shooter
remember the reddit witchhunt that happened during the boston bombings? that's the average scenario since most people aren't actually FBI-trained internet detectives.
