That is one thing that has always confused me. How is it constitutional to take away a citizen's right to vote?

because they were american citizens before and after the war? robert e lee served in the US army for over 30 years before the civil war and wasn't happy about the division or the war. he probably would have sided with the union if it wasn't for the fact that his home state joined the confederacy

yes everyone knows the day slavery ended black people integrated into the highest points of society and were never bothered again.
none of them had to stay on the plantation because no jobs would accept them or no homeowners would allow them to purchase property. there was no segregation that existed for another 100 years that essentially ruined the lifes of millions of black folk across the country. there was never a tulsa race riot where the government carpet bombed whole city streets over an alleged rape allegation that was later found out to be false. emmett till was never murdered and the murderers were never acquitted
