| Do you support the removal of Confederate monuments? |

| Verification:
honoring your enemies and preserving history is important. if these statues get taken down, its less to show newer generations of what can happen if you do this. it also helps people know what awe and power can be taken down. these statues show people who were very important people in the making of something which helped us alot evenbthough we lost alot of lives over it. also, who cares about someone who was related to a flag a long time ago, nearly 150 years ago actually? why cant we keep it? |

I don't support the idea of tearing down Confederate monuments by force. I do support the idea of removing these monuments through legally-sanctioned means, and I disagree with the claim that they're 'historically relevant'. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/2017/08/charlottesville-confederate-memorials-civil-war-racism-history/ For one, these monuments were erected not for historical purposes but in response to racial conflict. The reason why protestors have been able to topple them so easily is because they're mass-produced. That's why when you look at time-series plots of when Confederate statues have gone up, they peak in the 1910s and the 1960s. Why? Because that's when Jim Crow and the Civil Rights Era happened. (click to enlarge) I'm not saying we necessarily need to 'destroy' these statues but they shouldn't be on public property. They're basically just propaganda from a bygone era that has no business being on state capitols. Move them to a museum or a historical collection. |
