I think we should hold businesses to a higher standard than wild predators. (Edit: directly modeling any aspect of society after "the cruelty of nature" is not a good idea for obvious reasons.) If we can avoid causing unnecessary pain and suffering to animals, why not? Also your second paragraph makes no sense to me-- if something feels no pain and has little semblance of emotions, then there is no ethical issue with killing it in large numbers for food. I honestly can't tell what point you're trying to make there.

The US Slave trade caused an estimated 5 million deaths. 56 billion animals are slaughtered every year. That means we've killed almost a trillion innocent creatures since the millennium. Not sure you how can can argue that it isn't worse than slavery (other than buzzwords and vegan memes), unless you somehow delude yourself that the life of a person is literally infinitely greater than that of an animal--which it isn't.

A lot of people act shocked and post hilarious reactions to this, but I've never actually seen someone try to refute it.

if your first instinct as a human isn't to kill and eat an animal - some of which like chickens which are almost brainless - to saturate your hunger, then you may be biologically dysfunctional
