Why do so many people heavily obsess over shows?

Honestly Im never public with things video games/shows/things I like. I keep it to myself unless asked about them and in response I usually just talk about it a little and I never mention it outside of that.
I get really irritated if people obsess over a show/movie/video game. I mean talking about the latest episode of Game of Thrones is one thing but writing 3000 word long fan theories and stuff and obsessing over how much you wanna forget/how lovey a fictional character is kinda pisses me off.

a dude from the football team back at my old HS came in on holloween wearing a full fursuit, does that count?
