Hurricane Season 2017The Big, Bad, and UglyHurricane Harvey (August 17-September 1) (C:4) Category: 4 Confirmed Deaths: 81 Max Windspeed: 130 mph ("Wettest" hurricane to hit the US) Damage Costs: $70 billion (USD) (3rd most expensive hurricane to hit the US) Storm Path DescriptionFormed off the western coast of Africa, Hurricane Harvey began to travel across the Atlantic building up into a Tropical Storm heading towards the Caribbean. By August 24, it was upgraded to Hurricane Harvey after breaking up over the Yucatan Peninsula, quickly re-surging on a path towards Texas. By August 25, it reached Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale. The floodplains of the Houston area and surrounding cities caused massive flooding damage, unable to withstand Harvey's record-breaking rainfall, causing major and costly damage to the whole area. After striking Texas, Harvey began to break apart over Louisiana on a path north, before dissipating on September 1st. Harvey was the first major hurricane of the 2017 season, ending the 12 year major hurricane "drought". Hurricane Irma (August 30-September 16) (C:5) Category: 5 Confirmed Deaths: 82 Max Windspeed: 185 mph (ongoing) (One of the most powerful Atlantic hurricanes recorded) Damage Costs: ??? Storm Path DescriptionAs Harvey began to weaken after battering Texas, another wave came off West Africa by August 26. 4 days later, that wave became Tropical Storm Irma. At the end of Harvey around September 1st, Irma began to rapidly gain strength across the Atlantic, forming into a hurricane. By September 5th, Irma reached Category 5 status with record breaking power for the Atlantic, becoming the strongest Atlantic hurricane recorded. As of now, it has began to strike the Caribbean, leading to instant and violent destruction. It sees no signs of stopping, heading straight for Florida. Hurricane Jose (September 5-PRESENT) (C:1) Category: 1 Confirmed Deaths: 0 Max Windspeed: 150 mph (ongoing) Damage Costs: ??? Storm Path DescriptionFormed right after Irma gained Category 5 status, Jose has not done any significant damage towards anything. It has, however, been seen significantly strengthening (much like Irma) over the Atlantic, with a suspected path into the Caribbean upwards towards Florida and the Carolinas, possibly striking the area just nearly a week after Irma rips through. Still ongoing. Hurricane Katia (September 5-9) (C:2) Category: 1 Confirmed Deaths: 2 Max Windspeed: 105 mph (ongoing) Damage Costs: ??? Storm Path DescriptionFormed minutes after Jose, little is known yet about Katia. It does not seem to have the potential of Jose and Irma, but that makes it no less significant. It has a clear path into Mexico where it will hopefully dissipate over the dry regions, not causing too much damage. Hurricane Maria (September 16-NOW) (C:2) Category: 1 Confirmed Deaths: 0 Max Windspeed: 105 mph (ongoing) Damage Costs: ??? Storm Path DescriptionJust recently formed, Maria is coming through the Caribbean where Irma and Jose swept through to cause more damage. It's unclear if it'll hit the US, but as of now it doesn't seem to be too strong. Dishonorable MentionsHurricane Franklin (August 7-August 10) (C:1) Category: 1 Confirmed Deaths: 0 Max Windspeed: 85 mph Damage Costs: ??? Storm Path Hurricane Gert (August 13-August 17) (C:2) Category: 2 Confirmed Deaths: 2 Max Windspeed: 105 mph Damage Costs: ??? Storm Path The StatsTotal Deaths: 174 Total Storms: 7 Hurricanes, 5 Tropical Storms, 1 Tropical Depression Estimated Damage Costs: 125+ billion USD |

Hopefully by the time it hits Florida it'll weaken, but the islands affected are going to be absolutely obliterated. Apparently 90% of the property in Barbuda is leveled. loving insane man. |
