yeah sorry to break it to you but templars are the strongest class according to all xcom pros. skirmisher can't deal 15 damage in one hit and then block the next incoming attack, forcing the attack to rebound on the alien that used it dealing another 7 damage, and then next turn deal a total of 50 damage as they unleash an ionic storm which has a 10 square radius and deals 15 damage to each enemy inside it

now while all this is very well and good, skirmishers have a neat grappling hook
tbh templars were my least used class in my c/i campaign

skirmishers have their own niche, but in all honestly templars are the ultimate tank/melee unit in wotc. templars are so good that people actually consider them as op as the psi operative
