The most probable answer is their own hubris in the creation and handling of the Metroids, a product to combat the X Parasite, which resulted in division and war with the Metroids, likely through a difference in ideology that the Metroid resented their creators for.

The team response for Halo 5's story were the same team who developed the Spartan Ops story line. Halo 4 vanilla copped a fair bit of backlash over treatment of Cortana and Chief and its constant exposition, so they probably wanted to cater the story to the die-hard Halo Lore nerds who didn't need prior explanation and focus on other parts of the Halo universe, such as the fate of Blue team.
Good(-ish) intentions, terrible execution.

It's safe.
No-one has written an amazing Star Wars movie story since Empire Strikes Back. The prequels featured a lot of flaws (George was a great cinematographer, but an awful script writer), and all the games, comics, books and TV shows have catered to various audiences and haven't had the same kind of charm or qualities as the Original Trilogy. Everybody was loving nervous about getting it right for a main-line story, so they opted to play the safe card and rely on a known, working formula with enough variation to let it stand by itself.
