from what I've seen recently, iphones/androids can text to speech the texts so they can hear it and speech to text back to the phone so they can respond (was watching a friend on the bus do it)
it's actually pretty cool how well it works, he could navigate by swiping in directions and talking at it (without the phone having any visual indicators of which way to swipe, I was just like lolwhat that lock screen doesn't look like it can do that)

so probably just stick with full words instead of misspelling everything
