The thing which legitimized it in my mind was the use of police force to suppress a vote. Whether it was a legitimate vote or not does not have any bearing that the Spanish government did not want the vote to pass or to hear any results on the matter and went to brutalizing its own citizens instead. If they just said "no" and sent out peacekeeping forces to prevent violence and property damage only and regardless declared direct rule, then I see no problem. Is it "fair"? To some, yes, and to some, no. It's the usage of force that legitimizes the vote and a rebellion should it come. |
