i think catalonia has the right to independence if they so wish (and they do, as the referendum is evidence of), hence why I support it

They have the right to independence if they can earn it. It's quite clear their parent government, Spain, is not keen on letting them go. As Kearn stated, the referendum held in Catalonia is illegal, per the Spanish constitution and the agreement signed sum 40 years ago.
If Catalonia can earn their independence, however it may be, then they will be welcomed into the world. Such is the way with all nations that have arisen, past or present.
Opinion wise, I think what Spain has done thus far is too extreme, while brutalizing and beating Catalans is morally wrong and is only going to alienate them, they have a right to react towards a state that is trying to secede. Catalonia is only going to hurt itself however if they manage to gain independence.

And how do you propose Catalans "earn" it? Through violence? They have a right to independence if they want it. Full stop. You don't have to earn rights.

Let's stop trying to rationalize brutality. Spain does NOT have a right to react this way. Spain is a state - they have no rights above that of people.
