what is the point of this item? it only breaks things
but my dear, that IS the point

if you use one of these on anyone's computer you're just an starfish.
risking permanent hardware damage is no joke

can this destroy a hard drive and corrupt it to the point data is unbreachable? asking for a friend

do NOT do this, you could get in a lot of trouble for property damage

it was made to test electronics

on april fools day my junior year of high school i pulled a prank by taping the laser ports on the mice in all the computers in one of the classrooms. it took them about 2 minutes to realize why the mouses werent working lol

i guess to test how well-designed they are/if the device has surge protection

if it's a consumer grade device, it doesn't have any kind of surge protection in the usb port as it is not supposed to have 200 volts put trough it

this kinda of device is recommended to use with a "shield" part that's sold separately, for any real kind of testing it should be a one piece device to make malicious use harder, with a proper indicator instead of wires you have to spark together..

there is no practical use for this

Wrong.
Just discovered something magical.
Use the USB + Shield on my phone, use sparks to create fire, use fire to hit massive doink.
