My mom is a former real estate agent, and iirc, she said that real means that it is actual, and estate means house, which is a type of property. So actual, owned, property.

Estate refers to property as owned by an individual. The real implies that the estate has actual market and legal value beyond the individual, such as a house, while possessions are not considered of any value by the same measurement.
