It's more likely a yo-yo de-spin, in which two weights connected to the vessel by cable are released while the vessel is spinning at a high speed, transferring angular momentum.

Literally yes. When my friend shattered both his legs in the Olympic national forest I used an emergency GPS beacon to get him airlifted out. If I was a handicapped flat earther gravity denying moron who didn't possess basic scientific knowledge he would've likely died.
