See, the United States has a long and storied tradition of moving the goalposts to make it look like we're the best. For instance: the national socialists were doomed to fail after Operation Barbarossa because they started a two-front war against the USSR and the other European Allies. This happened in June 1941, which was roughly six months before the United States entered the war. But nope, it was
our intervention that won the entire thing and we were the ones who
saved Europe.
Or the Space Race. The entire thing was a race to be the first nation to exert a presence in outer space. Did we put the first object into orbit? Nope, that was the Soviets with Sputnik I in 1957. Did we put the first man into orbit? Nope, that was the Soviets with Yuri Gagarin in 1961. But despite all that, we still 'won' the space race by changing the finish line to the moon at the last minute.
