Where Should I Start With: Elder Scrolls?

Author Topic: Where Should I Start With: Elder Scrolls?  (Read 2310 times)

I'd like to turn this into a megathread or just have this as a series of topics where newbies to a series can get opinions on where they should start.

I've got all the Elder Scrolls games. Even have Morrowind for the original Xbox. I honestly don't know where to begin though. I realise Skyrim is the most gentle to newcomers with its mechanics, while Oblivion and Morrowind are the most rewarding as far as the story, even if the gameplay is a bit arse at times. Where should I begin? Go the hard route or take it easy? What mods should I get? If I go Skyrim, I'd like to play the Enhanced version.

outside of newer graphics and 64bit compatibility as well as (((paid mods))) i don't see why you would get the enhanced version over the original 2011 release of skyrim
as for the other games i would probably start with morrowind since that was my first as well

the elder scrolls arena
you filthy casual

It was free since I already had the basegame and all DLC.

ah ok ignore what i said then

performance boosting mods will likely be a savior to you, depending on your build (or any build really):
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/59305/

skyui is nice for making things easier to understand and a wee bit less cluttered:
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/3863/

this will skip the entire dumb-ass loving intro sequence:
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/9557/

and this should make ragdolls not be so forgety:
https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/601/

the only thing that could go wrong is that i just googled these and i've never played skyrim before. these mods could just all be incompatible and i'm a loving idiot

but hey that's the fun of installing skyrim mods in combination right ?

skyrimgems was a good website for finding mods depending on like what category you're looking for but at some point between november last year and now the site went down. luckily some dude saved an archived version of it so you can still use it somewhat

these were my favorite mods i used in my last playthrough:
frostfall: adds camping and survival elements to the game (i e body temperature)
bethesda hired the guy who made this to make survival mode in special edition so that should tell you about the overall quality of this mod or maybe not considering this is bethesda
ineed: more basic survival elements
basically the hunger and sleep mechanics from new vegas hard mode
wet and cold
this one is mostly visual but it introduces some minor gameplay elements and it also works with the above 2 i mentioned

there are some mods that go along with these quite nicely such as get snowy which makes people look like theyre covered in snow when its actually snowing. or something like cloaks of skyrim which help you fight the cold in frostfall

here's a nicer version

You can play any of them and get the lore the same, but it really comes down to gameplay with the elder scrolls: morrowind is almost entirely dice-based gameplay where you're expected to exploit the system but not too much (it's weird is all I'm gonna sa). Oblivion is a nice balance between in action and rpg elements, and has some of the best guild quests. Skyrim is... well the best way to put it is that for every step forward, they took a step back somewhere: magic was nerfed hard and spell crafting was removed, alchemy is ehh, the perk system could've been done better (the mastery perks are basically point drains) and the lack of stats meant a lot of things had to be butchered in order to work. But it has the smoothest gameplay imo and if you just want to play an action rpg it's fine.

Always start with the first mainstream release. In ES case that would be oblivion

I felt that although it has some flaws, I enjoyed skyrim the most as someone who had never played an elder scrolls game (and then went to play oblivion and morrowind afterwards.)

Skyrim is a good place to start because it's not in any way frustrating for newcomers.

morrowind was mainstream af when it released dude, there's a reason so many people consider it their favorite

My answer's going to sound a little strange, but the best way to play through the games is is in chronological order, really. Moving through any game series in chronological order allows you to experience it the same way people playing the games for the first time did(and this is advice for any game series in general, really, not just TES), so you can really appreciate how each game improves on the one that came before it. It sounds off considering how poorly Arena and Daggerfall have aged compared to their successors, but it makes you appreciate what comes next that much more.

I didn't like skyrim. Felt like 1 step forward 2 steps back. Puzzles went from intricate riddles and research to "match teh pictur on th waal" and dungeons were just clearly modular designed without any thought.

I've installed a number of mods just to fix that issue but aside from that I would truly recommend oblivion or morrowind.
