Can someone explain gamergate to me in the simplest way possible

Here's an actual threat that happened:
May 1, 2015 - DC gamergate meetup received a bomb threat. The metro police and FBI were involved and determined the threat to be credible enough to warrant evacuation. 1 2
Note the timing - the threat happened right in the middle of the event so everyone had to be evacuated and they were massively inconvenienced. False flags happen before the event, with enough time for the event to be gracefully cancelled with an accompanying press release from the 'victim'.

AP US History is already a pretty weird class since the curriculum is made up by the ultra-liberal College Board.
