the ATH-AD700x (which I have) would be the open-back equivalent in terms of price range

but if he needs them to be under $100, the 500x would be a step lower

Currently using some Sennheiser HD 500a's with an Audioengine D1 DAC / Amp. They're pretty old, but they still sound amazing.

My bf has these but wireless and I think they are really great as well. Once my Logitech g930s bite the dust I'll be switching to those

Also I've had a pair of Sennheiser 333ds and had horrible luck with them and the crappy software that came with them. Idk if it's changed since then.

Alternatively you can go with nice headphones and a snowball mic setup
