the reason people widely acknowledge the Beatles as among the greats if not the greatest is because you could probably name more Beatles songs than you could songs for any other band or musician, and a lot of that has to do with Paul McCartney and John Lennon being really good lyricists that and the majority of musicians that you know will have probably taken influence from the Beatles in one way or the other, like it or not I don't like the idea that the Beatles albums were "made to sell easily", that might have been true for their early British invasion era stuff but not for the albums they made when they were forgeted up on drugs and recording what they thought up during that trip, yet those albums are considered the best of their entire career |

The Beatles were actually amazing from Rubber Soul to the White Album, and the production quality of their music I imagine is what sets them apart from their contemporaries the most. Many of their songs released decades ago still sound strikingly modern. that said a lot of their peers were just as good, frequently better, but are forgotten by a lot of people. Why, idk. I think a lot of people just like the beatles because they're the beatles, and fail to give other psych pop from the same period a chance, which is a lame thing to do. anyway, Paul and George were the two best songwriters imo, Yoko was also bad ass at times |

The Beatles are some of "the greats" because of how they changed music. Look at music from 1960-1970, and how totally different it is. The difference between dopey late-50s love songs and psychedelic concept albums in the late 60s. It's not necessarily that they're great musicians or brilliant music artists, though you could argue that, but the impact they had. |
