Author Topic: Youtube is a Monopoly  (Read 5654 times)

because you're all so busy whining about how bad youtube is instead of developing your skill set

anyone who already has the skill set to create a multi-billion-dollar video platform is fine with youtube

we get it master matthew, you don't like youtube. you don't have to make 100 billion posts exclaiming how horrible the site is.
also, a reality check: monopolies are not illegal unless the company uses bad conduct to become one. https://www.girardgibbs.com/antitrust/unlawful-practices/monopoly/

That isn't what potential self-made billionares do, they buckle their forgetle and strike when the time is right.

The time isnt right yet, because despite the fact the masses arent ready to move on, the content creators are.

I know this very well...

But youtube is still a monopoly.

Incorrect.

you do realise how loving bad of a business youtube is right?

it's not even profitable, the reason there is no alternatives is because its a handicapped business model

youtube would get CREAMED by any competition, but no one is doing it because do you know how much loving money it takes to host and cache trillions of hours of video in data centers all over the world.

the only reason youtube is alive is because google is it's life support

this too. if youtube operates with a profit, its 100% certainly a small one considering they compensate content creators and copyright holders (eg record labels or hollywood) for hosting their content

Sorry for the late reply, forgot about this thread.

because no other platform is as good as doing what youtube does. youtube is the top platform for a reason and most people don't have a problem with it
Absolutely. YT is the best at what it does. It is easily the worst at how it treats its content creators though. Then again, there aren't many (if any) alternatives big enough to compete with YT. So it might be more correct to say they've become the worst at content creator treatment full-stop.

While most viewers may not have a problem with YouTube, content creators; who have made YT the big company it is today, definitely have a problem with getting the short-end of the stick.

it would have to take youtube doing something seriously wrong to forget over a large majority of people who've been satistified with it thus far
On a viewer level, yes. On a content creator level, this has already happened. Problem is, there is nowhere else to turn if the content creators want to keep their developed following on another platform. Because no other platform is popular enough to make it an easy migration. Leaving them (more or less) no choice but to stick it out on YouTube and hope a change for the better occurs at some point.

I wouldn't be too surprised if most people (both viewers and content creators) were satisfied with YT in the past (even with previous quirks). But now? Viewers haven't been majorly affected in any way (that I know of), but smaller content creators who needed the monetization to do YT full-time are in big trouble. Especially now that YT's algorithm chooses what videos to show in front of people (more of this is explained in the link in my previous reply to you).

"-Youtube"
Okay and what are the normal results?
the normal results are youtube suggestions, as expected. i simply wanted to point out that getting non-youtube options arent impossible and as such they aren't being nearly as bad as you make it out to be
Quanitity=/=Quality, if other videos are better fit for the search on other sites, they should show up first, but they don't.

Again adding -youtube to your search doesn't disprove my point.
the thing with that is that other videos would have to be a better fit, and seeing how google probably ups the priority with correlation to viewership and youtube is already the major platform (and nobody cares about anything else) it'd make sense they're more up front than anything else

you suggest that they're intentionally stabbing the other sites in order to increase youtube viewership, but fail to realize it could just be a coincidence of the algorithm working off relevancy and viewership

case in point:

there's also the fact that if you include "msn" or "cnn" into the searches, it'll pretty much only ever give those sites. i couldn't even find a youtube link searching for "cnn Annoying Orange" or something.

have you thought that maybe you're looking for a conspiracy that isn't there?

Yeah and the reason is because there is NO ALTERNATIVE.
if the market doesn't have any need for a competitor a competitor won't be successful. this is basic economics

you also don't realize that dailymotion has an alexa rank of 135, and over 300 million monthly users

now 135 might seem a little high, but to put it in perspective, the steam store has an alexa rank of 198
